Firewire and USB are two methods of connecting different pieces of equipment for faster data transfer.

Firewire IEEE-1394a was developed to allow fast data transfer, and is capable of transfer rates of 100, 200 and 400 MB per second.
Firewire IEEE-1394b standard currently allows 800MB/s.

USB was also developed to handle fast data transfer.
Currently, USB 2 is capable of data transfer of up to 480MB/s.
